When
G Money began the new year's eve rundown of 1Xtra’s 50 hottest records
of 2005, things seemed to bode well for British material, when Roll Deep
kicked off the show at No. 50 with
‘Shake A Leg’. Sadly, no more British product was heard until the
early 40s and late 30s rankings, when more grime cuts by the likes of
JME’s ‘Serious’ and Regal Players’ ‘Rude Boy’ made a
showing. Indeed, the Brits placed on 17 out of the 50. A 34% outcome
from a British radio station is poor. It’s worse when one thinks that
1Xtra is about “new black music”, but the placed British records are
overwhelmingly grime. The good news however is that the Brits managed to
place 4 records in the top 7 rankings.
