BLACK MUSIC IN BRITAIN MAPPING QUESTIONNAIRE

Click to go back to questionnaire

If your provision/activity or business, no matter how often or regularly, involves a recognisable amount of black or urban music content, then it's imperative to take part in this survey!

Topic
Black Music/Urban Music Within Britain (Scotland, Wales, and England)

Genre
Black music
(BM) here means music with total or substantial influence drawn from African, African-Caribbean, African-British, Afro-Latin and African-American musical styles from 1945, which includes styles termed ‘urban’, and some contemporary Brit-Asian fusions

Locality
Scotland, Wales and England

Exercise
A mapping exercise to find out the who's, what's, where's, when's, and why's of black music provision/activity in its various forms from 1945 onwards, notably the creators, the infrastructure/industry, funding and trade organisations, library/museums, archives, persons with specialist knowledge, or deep history, of British black music history, and collections of  black music products/artefacts

Reason
To create a directory and a research resource outlining black music provision/activity within Britain for practitioners, organisations, researchers, students, fans and other interested persons/organisations

Closing date & Incentive
Wednesday December 8 2004. Whilst we believe most people/organisations either involved in or interested in BM would be interested in responding in order to create as comprehensive a resource, which ultimately benefits all involved in the BM sector, in order to make sure we get as many responses back by our deadline, ALL respondents will automatically be entered into a prize draw in which the first 25 drawn from the electronic hat will receive various music products, such as CDs, T-shirts, tickets

Scope of information provided
Apart from fields marked with * to help us produce a useful directory for potential clients to contact you, you are at liberty to fill in, or not, only what you care to. Most of the non-directory information will go towards providing scope of provision and analysis of provision past and on-going, and in most cases WILL NOT identify individual persons or organisations.

REMEMBER: COMPLETING A PARTIALLY FILLED QUESTIONNAIRE IS BETTER THAN NOT AT ALL, OR ONE THAT ARRIVES LATE!

We are interested in finding out networking opportunities or difficulties, so we hope you’ll provide some information

We’re also particularly interested in mapping out the breadth and timeline of BM provision/activity from 1945 onwards, so we are interested in the history of what has gone on before that you were either involved in or know about. Particularly projects that have failed or ceased, so that we can learn from that experience

Initial mode of data capture
Through emailed questionnaire. There will be telephone follow-ups with a sample of respondents. If after submitting your questionnaire, you would also like to make contact by telephone, please see contact details below

Who is conducting the research?
Kwaku/BBM/BMC for an academic resource

Kwaku is a London-based music business tutor, consultant and journalist. He’s also a black music archivist and activist. He’s the founder of www.britishblackmusic.com (BBM), which aims to be a one-stop open access online resource covering music, music business and education (updates can be found at www.bbm-on.com). He is also the founder of the Black Music Congress (BMC), which is a forum for debating and discussing black music issues. It usually takes place at City University London.

He holds a Masters in Media, and Music Business Management, and has taught music business modules at Westminster University and City University. Magazines he writes for include DJ, Billboard and Gargamel. He can be reached via editor@britishblackmusic.com 020 8450 5987, 07956 21 57 29

What can YOU do to help?
Apart from sending in your questionnaire in good time, it would help if you could take the time to forward it to persons/organisations that you think need to be included in this mapping exercise. You may use this link
Double-click to forward questionnaire, which copies it to us, so that we can do the chasing up, if necessary

Thank YOU for your interest and time
