What you
could be doing today (Saturday July 16):
RISE
FESTIVAL
You could attend the Rise (formerly known Respect) Festival
12-8.30pm at Burgess Park, London SE5. The free major of London
sponsored festival celebrating the city’s diversity and opposing
racism features the likes of Lemar, Kano, Eska, and JJC, who will
be backed by a live band. I believe live
musicianship is an important, but lacking skill within
contemporary, popular black music. I felt last year’s headliners
Big Brovaz’s set lacked substance, and should have had a
full, live band. I made the
point to JJC, aka Big Brovaz producer Skillz, who
was part of the audience watching his group. Festivals on the
scale of Rise should budget for and encourage live musicianship.
Smaller festivals featuring non-black music routinely manage it.
