DVD Reviews

Faithless 'Live At Alexander Palace' (Sony BMG)

We must admit that although we respect what Maxi Jazz and Faithless have achieved, apart from the odd singles, like 'Muhammad Ali' and 'Miss U Less, See U More' (both featured on this DVD), we haven't been big fans. That's until we gave their 'Greatest Hits' compo a close listening. In fact some years ago, whilst in Norway to report on Olive, who were playing a supporting gig on Faithless' tour, we felt their powerful sound booming through the walls backstage, rather than watch them in the theatre.

Anyway, the convenience of digital technology means we can all experience the powerful live experience without leaving our front room. This DVD is really for Faithless and rave fans. For over an hour, the group, which includes keyboardist Sister Bliss, and ably supported on backing vocals and occasional guest vocalists in the shape of siblings LSK and Rhianna, deliver a full-on performance, which is oly tempered by Maxi in between song banter.

In addition to the hit songs, like 'Insomania', 'Salva Me', 'God Is A DJ', 'We Come One', the ravers are kept thrilled by tracks such as 'Bring Back The Family', 'Drifting Away', and 'Machines R Us'. Although the lighting technicians do a good job bathing the stage with a dynamic light show, without too much excitement happening on stage - it is a testament to the strength of the songs, and musicianship, that this concert holds attention for over one honour!
