The Genre Workshop Summary

What Is Black music?

What Is Urban Music?

Should it be African or Music Of African Origin?

Black music is everything they call urban

Inner-city

It is linked to certain types of music mainly from Africa e.g. Fela Kuti

Music from the soul

Patronising

It’s Black music because it is about the same collective struggle

Music created by people from the African diaspora

Marketing black culture within the context of creating better race relations

It is related but is not same as music made from the diaspora.

It should infuse some African mother tongue

A marketing label that makes it comfortable for a white artist to make black music

There’s the language problem. Lack of understanding of our mother tongues

It must be identifiably Black Culture

The crossover zone

Black Americans will not go for it. They have a very superficial appreciation of Africa and anything African

Black music is my life, my look

Black music, notably hip-hop, rap, R&B

Deals with issues that directly affect Black people

A way of separating popular Black music, notably hip-hop, rap, garage, dancehall reggae

Should NOT be compromised

Mainly white artists doing black music

Should urge escape from the reality of oppression

Taking Black music from black people

‘Black music’ is profitable/marketable, hence the term ‘urban music’.

Marketing Black culture as inclusive but not necessarily with Black tag
